"The Catcher in Rye" belonging to the English literary canon, I gave it a try. It's a coming-of-age novel the protagonist of which is Holden Caulfield, a rebellious teenager who is expelled from Pencey prep school, his fourth school, and spends a few days at different places in New York, because he doesn't dare to go home. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves. He keeps reminding the reader that he hates everything and everybody and this is all there is to say about the plot.Since I had read the short description, I knew before that the novel is "lazy in style, full of slang and swear words", and that there is "hardly any plot at all". This is not much of a problem if the appeal comes from the characters and their trains of thought. However, Holden is just the stereotypical version of the rebellious teenager who does not seem to care about anything and constantly repeats how much he hates everything before he comes to realize that he wants to be the catcher in the rye and help others so that they don't "fall off the cliff".In my opinion, 'the catcher in the rye" is not a must-read at all. The only thing I could relate to was Holden's questioning of things and conventions. Apart from this, it was a rather annoying read.
"Was? Wie alt war der Autor?" So war die Reaktion, als ich mich neulich generationsübergreifend mit einem Leser der Zielgruppe (Junge, 17 Jahre alt) über das Buch unterhielt. Er hatte es gerade ausgelesen, meine Erstlektüre liegt mittlerweile über zwanzig Jahre zurück. Und wie erstaunlich ähnlich unsere Eindrücke waren. Außer, dass er gedacht hatte, dieser Salinger, der könne kaum älter als Holden gewesen sein. Vielleicht so um die zwanzig. (Okay, Salinger war auch tatsächlich erst Anfang zwanzig, als die ersten Stücke des späteren Roman entstanden. Er war Anfang dreißig, als das Buch dann erschien).Aber nichts hat sich wirklich geändert, in den nun über sechzig Jahren nicht. Das sch... Erwachsenwerden! Die ganzen Ansprüche, die von den Eltern und Lehrern dauernd an die Jugendlichen gestellt werden. Dabei ist man an diesem Alter vorwiegend - und ja, Salinger war vielleicht der erste, der es wagte, das mal auszusprechen - am anderen Geschlecht (oder sogar am gleichen Geschlecht) und an den ersten sexuellen Erfahrungen interessiert. Und - oh! - wie frustriert einen das dann, wenn ausgerechnet der viel zu gut aussehende Zimmergenosse mit der geheimen Liebe ein Date hat! Während man selbst für ihn die Hausaufgaben machen darf, vielen Dank auch. Aber irgendwie... ja, der Gruppenzwang. Nicht uncool sein. Auch wenn man längst von der Schule geflogen ist.Holdens verzweifelter Kampf zwischen "dazu gehören" und "individuell sein" wollen, zwischen dem Klammern am inneren Kind und dem krampfhaften Spielen eines Erwachsenen (immer wieder die Versuche, in einer Bar Alkohol zu bekommen, das ständige Rauchen), zwischen dem Wunsch, dass ihm bitte jemand zuhört, und der eigenen Unfähigkeit, das Geschwätz anderer zu ertragen... das ist alles zeitlos.Und sogar die subtile, immer wieder kehrende innere Beschäftigung mit dem Tod. Dem Tod des jüngeren Bruders, aber auch der eigenen Sterblichkeit. Und schließlich der Erkenntnis, dass man doch leben und nicht sterben will, wie besch... die Lage momentan auch ist.Denn wenn man selbst erwachsen ist, dann kann man endlich alles anders machen.Für Salinger war die Lösung eine einsame Hütte im Wald. Auch Holden spielt mit diesem Gedanken, auch wenn es in dem Buch wahrscheinlich eher eine Metapher ist, die diese Sehnsucht nach einer "Sendepause" ausdrückt. Denn ganz am Ende merkt er, dass er plötzlich andere vermisst. Auch das kennt man ja. Ist man wirklich einsam, findet man so manchen im Rückblick auf einmal gar nicht mehr so nervig.Ach so, meine Botschaft aus dem Buch heute wäre: Quäl dich durch die Pubertät, danach wird es wieder besser. Viel besser. Erwachsensein bedeutet nicht automatisch zum "Phony" zu werden, sondern vor allem persönliche Freiheit.Die Botschaft des jungen Lesers war (und die fand ich besonders schön): du bist nicht allein mit deinen ganzen sch... Problemen.
Es ist ein Buch für Heranwachsende, daran führt kein Weg vorbei. Man sollte es lesen, solange man sich in der Pubertät befindet, sonst ist es nur noch halb so schön. Zweifellos gehört es zur Weltliteratur und ist zeitlos. Den wirklichen Reiz, das Geniale des Romans versteht der Leser wahrscheinlich am besten, wenn er das Buch als junger Mensch liest, ähnlich wie bei Goethes „Werther“. Als Erwachsenem ist einem manches peinlich und unangenehm, was man als Jugendlicher dachte und fühlte. „Der Fänger im Roggen“ ist DER Jugendliche schlechthin. Nie zuvor und bislang kein zweites Mal hat es ein Buch geschafft, mich vollständig in den Kopf einer fiktiven Figur hineinzuversetzen. Es ist gerade so, als ob man selbst die Hauptfigur wäre. Der Grund dafür ist wahrscheinlich, daß jeder Jugendliche ähnliches erlebt, gefühlt und gedacht hat, wie Holden Caulfield. Das erinnert den Leser zum einen daran, daß alle Menschen einerseits sehr ähnlich sind, was wohl eher ernüchternd ist, weil es uns bewußt macht, das wir austauschbar sind und nicht das Zentrum der Welt. Viel stärker wirkt aber das Gefühl der Liebe! Die Liebe für Holden Caulfield und die Menschen, die er auf seiner, eigentlich belanglosen Reise durch New York City trifft und letztlich die Liebe zu uns selbst und den Menschen um uns herum. Das mag nach Geschwafel klingen, verstehen kann man es wohl nur, wenn man das Buch selbst gelesen hat.Am besten liest man es als Jugendlicher, ohne zu viel Hintergrundwissen und auf Englisch!Für alle Leser, deren Leben sich durch den „Fänger im Roggen“ positiv verändert hat und die nun hungrig auf mehr von J.D. Salinger sind, empfehle ich keine weitere Werke des Autors anzurühren. Zum einen sind es nicht viele und deren Qualität ist leider bei weitem nicht so phänomenal wie dieser Klassiker. Das mag bedauerlich sein, aber dieser eine Roman ist mehr wert, als die Tausenden Seiten, die manch anderer Schriftsteller in seinem Leben produziert hat!
